A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 has been registered off the southern coast of Peloponnesus, a large peninsula in southern Greece, Itar-Tass quoted seismologists as reporting. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The quake, which seismologists qualify as strong, was felt in Peloponnesus and in other regions of Greece, including in the centre and in the north of the continental part of the country. The epicenter was in the sea, 225 kilometers southwest of Athens. According to Greek radio stations, local authorities are checking buildings for possible damage. Greece is one of the most seismically active countries in Europe. Almost half of all earth tremors registered in Europe are fixed in Greece.
