Flash floods which have affected ten sub districts in West Aceh District since last Wednesday (April 23), began to subside on Saturday, ANTARA reported. Flood victims were trying to clean up their houses as the floodwaters subside, Mursalin, a spokesman of the West Aceh district, said here on Saturday. The inundated sub districts were East Woyla, Woyla, Pantee Ceureumin, Johan Pahlawan, Kawai XVI, Panton Reu, Arongan/Lambalik, Woyla Barat and Sungai Mas, he said. The flood waters reaching a height of up to one meter, swept away two houses and forced 34,514 people in East Woyla to flee their homes, he said. "Today, the flood waters have subsided significantly. If there are no more rains, all refugees can return to their homes the day after tomorrow," he said. The floods, hitting West Aceh for the third time since early this year, had cut off the Meulaboh-Calang road for one day and disrupted education activities at a number of inundated schools. The West Aceh administration had provided relief aid to help the flood victims. La Nina-induced downpours have lately triggered floods in several Indonesian provinces such as West Sumatra, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi and Central Kalimantan.
