Flash floods swept away two houses and inundated thousands of others in West Aceh District following incessant rains over the past few days, ANTARA reported. The flooding which has hit West Aceh since Wednesday (April 23), submerged thousands of houses but claimed no casualty, Mursalim, a spokesman of the West Aceh administration, said here on Friday. Some 30,733 people were affected by the flooding which inundated West Aceh`s villages of East Woyla, Woyla, Pantee Ceureumin, Johan Pahlawan, Kawai XVI, Pantee Reu, Arongan/Lambalek, West Woyla, Meruebo and Sungai Mas. The worst-hit village is East Woyla, which is currently isolated due to the inundation, he said. The flooding was the third hitting West Aceh since January 2008. "There are a number of people who have fled their homes, but we have not had the exact numbers," he said. Flooding has also been reported in Aceh Jaya, Nagara Raya, Pidie and Southwest Aceh Districts. La Nina is expected to continue for the next three months based on current atmospheric and oceanic conditions and recent trends, according to the US Climate Prediction Center in its press release recently. "Expected La Nina impacts during April-June include a continuation of above-average precipitation over Indonesia and below-average precipitation over the central equatorial Pacific," the statement said.
