Dozens of prisoners protesting against poor conditions on the Ionion island of Corfu returned to their cells on Thursday after spending hours on the roof of the prison demanding that their needs be met, reports said, according to dpa. The inmates, reportedly numbering 100, climbed onto the roof of the prison using sheets and blankets on Wednesday and were refusing to come down unless their living conditions were improved. Prisoners at the Corfu penitentiary, which was built by the British in the 19th century, reportedly share a four-by-four-metre cell with four to five other inmates, all sleeping on the floor. Riot police had surrounded the outside of the prison while justice ministry officials negotiated with the inmates.
