British defense officials said they had sent about 14 helicopters to evacuate a North Sea oil rig on Sunday following a security alert, Reuters reported. Sky News said the evacuation operation followed a bomb threat and reported that a bomb disposal unit would be sent to the oil rig. Officials would not confirm the nature of the alert. A Royal Air Force (RAF) spokesman said about 14 helicopters were involved at the operation at the Safe Scandinavia rig, about 160 nautical miles north of Aberdeen, which is an accommodation base for oil workers. "There's a security alert. We've been requested to send out helicopters," a spokesman at the RAF's Kinloss base said.
