heavy Nasdaq composite index fell 6.95, or 0.3 percent, to 2,602.68. Intel shares continued to fall one day after Banc of America Securities downgraded the stock, along with other chipmakers. Sciele Pharma shares jumped 11 percent in active trading after the company received regulatory approval to sell a new version of its blood pressure drug Sular.
The New York Stock Exchange composite index rose 8.50 to 9,656.00. The American Stock Exchange composite index rose 13.99 to 2,419.04. And the Russell 2000 index fell 8.54 to 745.01.
