An infant was found dead in the winter cold Wednesday near a box for abandoned babies in Germany, according to DPA. An off-duty hospital orderly found the newborn male lying on outdoor stairs leading to the anonymous baby handover point. The body was cold, suggesting the child had been dead for several hours. An autopsy was under way to establish a time and cause of death or whether the child had been stillborn. There was no clue to the identity of the mother, or why she had not walked the last few steps to the heated baby box, built into a secluded outer wall at a city hospital.
