Tanzania's High Commissioner to South Africa became the latest high-profile victim of the country's violent crime problem when he was badly beaten by intruders at a farewell dinner in his honour in Pretoria, according to dpa. Emmanuel Mwambulukutu was listed in serious but stable condition in hospital Saturday after being badly beaten by thieves who stormed the party in a diplomatic residence, SAPA news agency reported. His wife and six other people sustained minor injuries after being beaten, some with bottles. The attackers tied up the around 25 guests and robbed mobile phones, money and household belongings before making off in Mwambulukutu's luxury jeep. One person was arrested in connection with the attack after police found him in possession of the car. The suspect was shot and injured during the police operation.
