The UN Security Council on Wednesday appointed Serge Brammertz as prosecutor for the international tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, charged with pursuing war crimes from the ethnic war that killed thousands of Bosnian Muslims in the 1990s, according to dpa. Brammertz, of Belgium, will take over the post from Carla del Ponte on January 1, moving from his current position as the lead investigator in the murder of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005. Brammertz has a four-year term.
