A rescue operation was underway Sunday by Greek coast guard vessels and helicopters to bring 250 illegal immigrants travelling on a Turkish ship to shore, reported dpa. The immigrants, of unknown origin, were reportedly sailing on the Turkish cargo ship Artak, when it signalled distress calls approximately 11 nautical miles west of the Peloponnese town of Katokolo. Coast guard frigates and two Super Puma helicopters were rushing to the Ionion Sea in an effort to save the 15 member crew and 250 immigrants who were sailing in strong winds and rough seas. The captain of the Turkish ship said he intended to offload the immigrants to Italy.
