A prison mutiny in the north-western Argentine province of Santiago del Estero left at least 31 inmates dead, while another prisoner revolt in the northern province of Formosa also claimed one life, the authorities said, according to dpa. In the city of Santiago del Estero, about 1,200 kilometres north-west of Buenos Aires, some prisoners set mattresses on fire Sunday to facilitate an escape attempt. The fire department needed longer than expected to put out the flames, due to a faulty pump. Most of those killed died of suffocation, and over 20 others were injured in the mutiny.
