At least seven people were killed and nine injured when a passenger bus mowed down a group of people crossing a road in New Delhi on Sunday, DPA quoted officials as saying. The victims in the accident that occurred in the southern Badarpur area included five women and a man belonging to one family, senior police official Anil Shukla told reporters. According to police, the death toll could rise as five injured who were moved to nearby hospitals were in a "critical state." The accident, which witnesses said took place because the driver was speeding, triggered mob-fury in the area as angry people threw stones and tried to set the bus on fire. People also beat up the driver of the bus who was also admitted in a hospital, Mahesh Kumar, a policeman said. Police had to resort to cane-charging and firing tear-gas to disperse the agitated mobs and deployed additional forces to prevent further violence, the NDTV network reported. This is among the worst road accidents blamed on privately- operated buses called Bluelines in the Indian capital in recent days.
