KOLKATA, India: Police say at least 12 passengers were killed when a speeding bus flipped as the driver swerved to avoid a cyclist on a road in eastern India. Pranab Kumar, a senior local police official, said 40 other people were injured Monday morning in Bankura district in West Bengal. The injured driver was hospitalized. The bus was on way to Purulia from Kolkata when it overturned near Kharbona village under Chatna police station in Bankura. Bankura Superintendent of Police Pranab Kumar said the accident occurred around 8 in the morning and some of the victims are women. Kumar said the bus carrying 60 passengers was trying to overtake the cyclist and then swerved to avoid the cyclist. The bus landed on its top with the wheels in the air and did not hit another vehicle. Kumar did not know what happened to the cyclist. The area is 240 km west of state capital Kolkata.
