Myanmar police allowed a group of more than 500 Buddhist monks past a roadblock Saturday to march past the house where opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is detained, witnesses said. The action came as thousands of monks carried on anti-government protest marches in Myanmar's largest city, Yangon, where Suu Kyi is under house arrest, and other cities in the tightly controlled country. The part of University Avenue where Suu Kyi's house is located has been closed to traffic since Sept. 17, the Associated Press reported. The monks stopped briefly in front of Suu Kyi's house and said some prayers before they started leaving at the other end of the road, said a resident, who asked not to be named for fear of being harassed by the authorities. After the monks had passed, the road was closed again.
