Police on Monday arrested a rebel commander who is believed to have led about 300 insurgents in India's remote northeast, authorities said, according to AP. Prabal Neog, a commander of the United Liberation Front of Asom, was captured at a highway checkpoint near Tezpur, a town 180 kilometers (115 miles) north of Gauhati, the Assam state capital, state police chief R.N. Mathur said. «Neog was arrested by the Assam police during vehicle checks on a highway near Tezpur along with his wife and a child,» Mathur told The Associated Press. Neog was believed to be in charge of one of the ULFA's four units, with about 300 fighters, he said. Neog gave up without any resistance, he said. «This is a very big catch for us.» There was no immediate comment from the rebel group, which has been fighting for an independent homeland since 1979, according to AP.
