A blast at a crowded roadside market Sunday in India's restive northeast killed eight people and injured 40, a local official said. The explosives were strapped to a bicycle at a busy weekly market that sells pigs, goats, vegetables and clothes in Kumarikata in western Assam, near the Bhutan border, local police official G.P. Singh said. About 20 of the victims were injured critically, he said. The blast was under investigation, but officials suspected the United Liberation Front of Asom, may have been involved because it has been active in the area, Singh said. ULFA is one of several rebel groups that are fighting for autonomy or independence in India's northeast.
