One officer was dead and another three were injured Thursday after a gunman opened fire on them in Miami-Dade County, Miami's Mayor Carlos Alvarez said in broadcast remarks, reported the DPA. The shooting occurred after police on a burglary surveillance detail stopped a man who was driving erratically in a local south- west neighbourhood, officials said. Alvarez warned that the suspect, Kevin Wehner, 30, was "considered to be extremely dangerous" and believed to be still armed. He asked the community for help in locating the suspect. An all-out search was underway for the suspect, with police helicopters looking in the suburban neighbourhood. Highway exits were shut down to help in the search, the Miami Herald reported online. When police officers stopped the suspicious car, the man, identified as Kevin Wehner, 30, got out and fired on the police officers, apparently with an AK-47, hitting four, the newspaper reported online. Wehner then fled. A car believed to be the shooter's was later found abandoned, along with the weapon, Linda O'Brian of the police force said in broadcast remarks. Police believed the suspect was still armed and wearing a bulletproof vest.
