At least 25 inmates died in a riot and fire at a Brazilian prison early Thursday, local media reported according to DPA. Inmates broke out of their cells and set a wing with prisoners from a rival gang on fire in Ponte Nova in the south-east state of Minas Gerais. The facility housed 170 inmates, although it was build to house 87, the police said. The remains of many of those killed were burned beyond recognition, authorities said. The prison's neighbours reported also hearing shots during the riot. The facility had been brought under control and those responsible for the fire were to be transferred to a high-security prison.
