Chancellor Angela Merkel is to inspect the effects of climate change at their most extreme on her forthcoming visit to Greenland, DPA quoted a German government spokesman as saying Wednesday. At the invitation of Danish Prime Minister Fogh Rasmussen, Merkel is to undertake a trip by sea on Thursday to the Ilulissat Icefjord to see how large chunks of the glacier there are falling off into the sea. On Friday, the chancellor is to take a helicopter trip over the region. Government spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm said scientific experts would accompany the chancellor, who is a physicist by training, to explain the effects of climate change on Greenland. Merkel will also meet Hans Enoksen, prime minister of the autonomous island under the Danish crown. The three leaders will also discuss bilateral issues and cooperation in the European Union.
