One person died and two more were feared dead after an oil tanker exploded and caught fire while undergoing repairs near the Greek port of Piraeus Monday, the Athens News Agency (ANA) reported, according to dpa. The three men were conducting welding work in the hull of the Panama-flagged oil tanker when the explosion occurred in the shipping dock of Perama, located approximately 15 kilometres west of Athens. The fire which followed filled the area with thick black smoke. Dozens of firefighters and ambulance crews were able to locate the body of a 25-year-old man but two more people were still believed to be trapped inside the hull. It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion but union officials blamed poor safety standards at the facility for the deaths.
