A senior U.S. official will seek Serbia's backing Tuesday for more negotiations over Kosovo's demands for independence. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried said in Kosovo on Monday that «a limited period of negotiations» was necessary between Serbs and Kosovo's ethnic Albanians. In Washington, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said that the United States was willing to allow an additional period of weeks or months for talks. Daniel Fried meets Tuesday with Serbian President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, the Associated Press reported. The U.S. and European Union have renewed their pressure for quick U.N. Security Council action to put Kosovo on the road to independence. Council members Russia and China remain opposed to any U.N. resolution that is not supported by Serbia and have called for new negotiations.
