Irish Customs and Excise was on Wednesday investigating the seizure of 2 million cigarettes, worth 700,000 euros (953,000 dollars), believed to have been smuggled into the country from Poland, national broadcaster RTE reported, according to dpa. The seizures over the weekend and on Tuesday in county Louth to the north of Dublin and in the capital itself came after suspicious shipments were made to a fictitious Irish company. A man in his 40s was arrested Tuesday as he arrived to collect the shipment. The cigarettes arrived from Poland and it was not clear if they were bound for Ireland, Northern Ireland or Britain, Irish Revenue officials told RTE. Investigations were continuing at home and overseas, the officials said.
