Security officials fatally shot two suspected Muslim insurgents Tuesday in a gun battle in Thailand's restive south, police said. The suspected insurgents were riding a motorcycle in Pattani province's Yarang district when a police patrol tried to stop them for questioning, acting on a tip-off that two men were on their way to attack an army unit in the area, police Lt. Korkiat Vongvorachat said. The suspected insurgents then opened fire at the police, leading to a five-minute gunbattle that left both of them dead, Korkiat said. One of the men used an AK-47 assault rifle that belonged to a policeman who was killed in a clash with insurgents last year, he said. A pistol was also found near the scene, the Associated Press reported.
