Cautious calm prevailed Wednesday at the Nahr al Bared camp after sporadic fighting, as the Lebanese Army advanced from the north-east against positions manned by Islamist militants at the outskirts of the camp, REPORTED DPA. The southern road to the camp, which had been used by humanitarian agencies to deliver aid, came under sniper fire earlier Wednesday by Fatah al-Islam militants who are holed up inside the camp. The army continued to tighten its siege on the camp as Lebanese army engineers continued to clear buildings at the outskirts of possible booby traps ahead of the troops' advance. The sound of loud explosion could be heard every now and then as the army blew up booby-trapped positions, witnesses said. According to an army source, the army managed to clear at least two buildings from bombs left behind by the militants. The army source said that the army had taken control of the Nawras compound, at the northern edge of the camp, where Fatah al-Islam militants used to meet.
