Parliament voted in favor of a proposed constitutional article that would allow a direct vote for Turkey's president, but the measure still needs to get past a final vote later Thursday. Legislators, who currently choose the president in a parliamentary vote, voted 369-22 in favor of the article in a constitutional amendment package. If the legislators approve the entire package in the final vote, then President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, who opposes the article, can either endorse it or call a referendum on the issue, the Associated Press reported.
