New UN special envoy to the Middle East Michael Williams met on Monday with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul- Gheit to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, presidential sources said, DPA reported. Abul-Gheit reportedly told Williams that a Palestinian-Israeli rationality has to be reached ahead of any discussions on the deployment of peacekeeping forces on the borders between Israel and the Palestinian Territories. Abul-Gheit said that action is more important that "creating an impression of action," adding that the current security situation increases the depression of the Palestinian people and gives strength to extremists and "the enemies of peace." It is fruitless to exclude Hamas from negotiations, since this side achieved victory in elections and represents a fragment of the Palestinian people, Abul-Gheit said.
