Indian forces killed five suspected communist rebels in eastern India in a five-hour gun battle, police said Sunday. The clash, which occurred late Saturday in the eastern state of Jharkhand, came after police received a tip that a group of rebels was gathering in the region, said local police officer Hari Narayan Singh, speaking by phone from Ranchi, the state capital. «The encounter lasted for five hours and when it was over we found five dead bodies, two females and three men,» Singh said. Singh said police also found a cache of arms and ammunition, the Associated Press reported.
