A suicide bomber was shot by police but managed to detonate his explosives Sunday in eastern Afghanistan, killing himself and six civilians while wounding nearly 50, including several policemen, police said, according to DPA. The attack came two hours after a bomb blast in the same crowded market in Khost, capital of the province of the same name, provincial police chief Mohammad Ayoub said. Din Mohammad Mohammadi, head of the provincial health department, said hospitals and clinics in Khost city received the bodies of the six victims while 48 wounded were under treatment. Some were in critical condition. Ayoub had earlier put the number of casualties at three killed and six wounded, including two policemen. "Two policemen patrolling in the Khost city suspected a man who had a strange load on his back and ordered him to stop," Ayoub said. "The police shot the man as he tried to flee the area. The wounded bomber detonated his explosive-packed vest, killing three bystanders and wounding six others including the two policemen who were pursuing him," he said.
