A general strike brought 14 southern Spanish municipalities to a partial standstill today in a protest against the closure of a US car-parts plant, trade union sources said. About 300,000 workers had been called to back the protest of the 1,600 employees of the Spanish plant of the bankrupt car parts supplier Delphi in Puerto Real in Cadiz province, reported dpa. Practically all the workers participated in the strike, which paralysed industrial areas and garbage collecting and reduced bus services to a minimum, according to the trade union CCOO. Delphi announced the closure of its Spanish plant in February. The closure is expected to kill 1,600 jobs and affect those of more than 2,000 related workers. -- SPA
