At least five people were killed on Tuesday and 17 others injured when a truck plunged into a ravine in the southern Philippines, a police report said. The victims were aboard the ill-fated truck on their way to attend the wake of a dead relative when the accident occurred in Tulunan town in North Cotabato province, 960 kilometres south of Manila, dpa reported. Investigators said the truck's brakes malfunctioned while it was negotiating a downhill slope in the area. All the fatalities were killed on the spot, police said. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital.
