Somalian troops backed by Ethiopians on Wednesday were fighting with insurgents in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, the United Press International (UPI) reported. Witnesses told the Shabelle Media Network that at least 10 people had died in a gun battle near the former Somalia Defense Ministry. Exact casualty figures in the fighting, which had gone on for hours and was spreading to new areas of the city, were not available, Shabelle reported. Reports said some government troops had been captured by insurgents.
