A cold wave with snowfall and storms Tuesday hit Spain after an unusually mild winter, news reports said. Temperature dropped by more than 10 degrees Celsius to below zero in parts of the north, dpa reported. Twenty centimetres of snow blanketed parts of the Basque and Burgos regions, leaving a village isolated near Palencia. About 300 lorries got stuck on a road from Burgos to Portugal, and the Basque authorities banned lorries from several roads. Rail traffic was also suspended in several places, and some inland flights cancelled. Snow blocked about 20 mountain passes. In other places, heavy rains sparked flooding, with high waves shattering railings and moving parked cars in the coastal city of Santander. Meteorologists predicted winds of up to 150 kilometres an hour.
