Belgium EU Development Commissioner Louis Michel on Saturday said he is to set aside his position in the European Commission in order to re-enter politics in his native country, according to dpa. Informing Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso of his plans, Michel said he would relinquish his EU duties from May 12 to the Belgian elections on June 10. European Enlargement Minister Olli Rehn will take over Michel's duties in the interim. A former Belgian foreign minister, Michel is seeking a seat in the country's senate, the upper house of the parliament.
