Two Chinese fishing boats were seized today on suspicion of operating in South Korea's southwestern waters, local maritime police said. The Mokpo Coast Guard said the two vessels were caught operating illegally inside South Korea's 200-nautical-mile (370-kilometer) Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), some 56 kilometers northwest of Hong Island off the southwest coast. According to Yonhap, officers were questioning the Chinese crew to determine why they were inside the South Korean EEZ. They are to be detained until an appropriate fine or bond is paid, according to the police. South Korea operates patrol boats and helicopters to combat increasing instances of Chinese poaching in its waters. -- SPA
