A 6-year-old Indonesian girl who died after being rushed to a hospital in Central Java last week was confirmed to have succumbed to bird flu, DPA quoted a senior health official as saying today. The girl, named Qumilah, died suddenly on January 19 at a hospital in Yogyakarta province after undergoing only 90 minutes of treatment. "She died of bird flu," I Nyoman Kandun, director-general for infectious diseases at the Indonesian Health Ministry, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA). The death was Indonesia's 63rd from 81 cases of the H5N1 avian influenza virus - the highest rate in the world - and sixth this month.
