A landslide triggered by heavy rains struck a remote island in north-east Indonesia, killing at least 28 people and displacing more than 3,000 others in three villages, dpa quoted an official as saying today. The floods hit Tahuna, district capital of the Sangihe islands, about 250 kilometres north of the North Sulawesi provincial capital Manado, at about 2 a.m. last Friday. Christian Tilla, chief of the North Sulawesi provincial health department, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa by phone Tuesday afternoon that 28 bodies had been found and the search was continuing for another seven people still missing. At least 3,990 people fled their homes and took refuge from the floods in schools and government buildings, he said. The slide destroyed at least 64 houses and two churches on the island. Bad weather has limited communications and forced medical personnel to travel there by boat from Manado.
