At least 40 passengers died after a speeding bus veered off the road and caught fire in eastern Bangladesh on Saturday, a police official said. The accident occurred about 55 miles east of the capital, Dhaka, as the bus tried to overtake another small bus, area police chief Mahbubul Haque told The Associated Press by telephone from the scene. In addition to those killed, many people were burned and injured, Haque said without providing further details. Local television station Channel I reported 50 to 70 people were inside the bus when the accident occurred. Further details were not available immediately.
