Rescuers on Tuesday recovered the body of a 9-year-old boy from the wreckage of a building housing military families, raising the death toll in the collapse caused by a boiler explosion to seven, AP quoted officials as saying. Police also on Tuesday detained five people, including three repairmen and two others in charge of the central heating system, for questioning on suspicion of causing death by negligence, the prosecutor's office announced. Helped by sniffer dogs, teams were still trying to reach a woman believed trapped under the rubble of the building in Diyarbakir, the largest city in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast. Monday's explosion in the basement of the building in a heavily guarded military compound knocked down part of the five-story building, affecting at least five apartments. Among the dead were five children, including the 9-year-old boy found Tuesday, as well as a newborn. Rescuers working through the night under floodlights reached the body of the boy in the early hours of Tuesday.
