MADE POLITICAL DECISION. THE COUNCIL EXPRESSED HOPE THAT TRUTH WOULD BE REVEALED AND THOSE WHO COMMITTED SUCH TERRORIST ACTS BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE. ON THE SUDANESE AFFAIRS, THE COUNCIL EXPRESSED REGRET OF THE CONTINUATION OF THE HUMANITARIAN TRAGEDY IN DARFUR, URGING THE SUDAN'S GOVERNMENT AND WARRING FACTIONS TO RESORT TO DIALOGUE AND MASTERING THE VITAL NATIONAL INTERESTS OF THE COUNTRY. THE COUNCIL CALLED ON THE WORLD COMMUNITY TO PROVIDE THE UTMOST POSSIBLE ASSISTANCE TO ENABLE THE SUDAN TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE, NOTING THAT SUDAN'S GOVERNMENT HAS TAKEN A NUMBER OF POSITIVE STEPS IN THIS CONCERN AND LAUDING THE EFFORTS MADE BY THE ARAB LEAGUE, AFRICAN UNION AND UNITED NATIONS TO HELP SUDAN COPE WITH THIS SITUATION IN A WAY THAT EVADES ANY CONFRONTATION WITH THE WORLD COMMUNITY. ON SOMALIA, THE COUNCIL CALLED ON THE SOMALI WARRING FACTIONS TO RESORT TO NEGOTIATIONS AND DIALOGUE TO REACH A NEGOTIABLE SOLUTION TO END THEIR DIFFERENCES ON POWER AND RESTORE STABILITY AND SECURITY OF THE COUNTRY. THE COUNCIL RENEWED THE TERM OF OFFICE OF ABDULRAHMAN BIN HAMAD AL-ATIYYAH AS SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE GCC FOR THREE YEARS, EFFECTIVE THE FIRST OF APRIL 2008 IN RECOGNITION OF HIS SUCCESSFUL EFFORTS.
