An armed man released most of the hostages he was believed to be holding on a hijacked bus on the outskirts of this city Friday, but kept his ex-wife he had threatened to kill aboard the bus with him, AP reported. Globo News aired live footage showing men leaving the bus through the driver's side window where it was parked on a service road off the President Dutra highway leading out of the city. Rio de Janeiro police chief Hudson Aguiar said the gunman had released 11 men and was still holding about eight people hostage aboard the bus. «The negotiations are proceeding very well,» Aguiar said in a televised interview. «He's not making any demands at this point, he's just trying to figure out how to get on with his life after this.» Live television footage showed the gunman's brother and sister standing on a bench outside the bus and talking with the gun man inside. The hostage situation began when police pulled the bus over after being tipped off by the wife of a man who was aboard the bus and who had called her on his cell phone. Shortly after the bus had been stopped, the gunman released some 20 hostages, mostly women and children, from the bus he seized near the working class town of Nova Iguacu, Amorim said.
