Suspected militants fatally shot a tribal elder who backed the Pakistan government's drive to evict foreign fighters from the region bordering Afghanistan, officials said Sunday. Masked gunmen killed Malik Zarwali on Saturday as he drove home in South Waziristan, a district official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, the Associated Press reported. Also Saturday, suspected militants abducted a government official in North Waziristan as he was traveling home for the weekend, another official said. Faizullah Khan was seized in the town of Bannu when five masked gunmen took him from a bus at a roadblock east near Mir Ali, a town in North Waziristan, the official said.
