A bomb exploded Saturday outside a shop in the southwestern city of Bannu, killing one person and wounding seven, police said. The deceased was suspected of belonging to a militant group, said police superintendent Dilawar Bangash. Three of the wounded were said to be in critical condition and have been taken to Peshawar for treatment. Bannu, 240 kilometers southwest of Islamabad, is located near the troubled tribal region of South Waziristan where Pakistani forces have been conducting operations against the Taliban and al-Qaeda linked foreign and local militants.
