Scores of homes and agricultural land were flooded across northern Greece on Sunday after torrential rain that fell over much of the country, authorities said, according to AP. More than 80 homes were flooded and 15 people had to be rescued by boat in the village of Melisourgo, some 90 kilometers (56 miles) east of Thessaloniki, the fire service said. State-run NET TV said water levels on the streets of Melisourgo rose to as much as 2 meters (6 1/2 feet). Several homes were also flooded in the nearby villages of Paleohori, Olympia, Apollonia and Kalivia. In Kalivia, five residents were evacuated by helicopter from a flooded field while a bridge on the highway connecting Thessaloniki to Kavala also suffered damage. No one was reported injured, the fire service said. Crop land in the region was also reportedly badly affected but the extent of the damage was not immediately known. «We have suffered a lot of damage, it's a disaster. Certain areas have been blocked off by the floods,» said Panayiotis Psomiadis, the regional governor based in Thessaloniki. The Meteorological Service forecast rain would continue in northern Greece until Wednesday.
