Chinese President Hu Jintao and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said they were «deeply concerned» over a possible North Korean nuclear test and promised to cooperate in getting Pyongyang to stand down, according to a Japanese official. «Hu and Abe, during their talks, said they were deeply concerned over North Korea's threat to conduct a nuclear test, and they vowed to cooperate to dissuade it from conducting one,» a senior Japanese delegation official told reporters on the condition of anonymity following standard practice. The official did not provide any details on how the Asian powers, whose relations have been estranged over energy competition, territorial issues and rows over their history in recent years, would try to exert pressure on Pyongyang. Abe, who is making a fence-mending visit to China, put the North Korean issue at the top of his agenda following Pyongyang's announced intention last week to conduct a nuclear test. The Japanese leader will travel to Seoul Monday morning for talks with South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun, the Associated Press reported.
