A U.S. soldier was killed in fighting in northern Iraq, the U.S. command said Saturday. The soldier, assigned to the 3rd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, died on Friday while conducting operations near Beiji, 250 kilometers (155 miles) north of Baghdad, the military said. No further details on the incident were released and the name of the soldier was being withheld pending notification of next of kin, the Associated Press reported.
