Hurricane John lost strength on Friday as it headed for Mexico's Baja California peninsula and was downgraded to a less powerful category 2 storm, the U.S.-based National Hurricane Center said, according to Reuters. Hundreds of foreign tourists and thousands of local residents were crowded into shelters in the exclusive resort of Los Cabos as John approached. It was due to hit the peninsula west of Los Cabos on Friday afternoon. John packed winds near 110 mph (185 kph) and would only need a slight increase in wind speed to be upgraded back to a stronger category 3 storm, the hurricane center said.
