Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni warned Saturday that combined forces of his army, that of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the southern Sudan army SPLA will attack Lords Resistance Army LRA guerillas in their bases in the north-eastern DRC if the current talks to end northern Uganda's 20-year civil war fail, according to dpa. Museveni told reporters that the UN peacekeeping force in the DRC, MONUC, would also join the operation and that both the southern Sudan leadership and the government in Kinshasa have agreed to send their armies against the LRA which now occupies part of a national game park in a lawless region of the vast country. The month-long peace talks being held in southern Sudan's regional city of Juba have been mired in stalemate with the LRA setting up sudden and mostly unrealistic demands, according to dpa. "There are many options if the LRA refuses to end the war through peace talks. If (LRA leader Joseph) Kony doesn't use this chance, the attack awaits him. A few days ago, I sent (defence minister Amama) Mbabazi to Kinshasa and he spoke to Kabila and (presidential hopeful Pierre) Bemba," the Ugandan leader told the joint news conference attended by visiting Sudanese vice president Salva Kiir. "We floated our idea, the idea of the SPLA, MONUC, the Congo army and our forces operating against Kony in Garamba national park. Kabila and Bemba accepted that idea. That is on the menu for Kony if he doesn't accept the talks," he added. The talks to end the war were initiated by southern Sudan's leaders, but the rebels have been setting up conditions that have halted the negotiations, including the latest where they demanded the mediation of South Africa instead of the Sudanese.
