Germany is not prepared to contribute ground troops to a U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon but will consider offering navy support, Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday, according to Reuters. Germany could also provide air reconnaissance and logistical support but that was out of the question for the moment, Merkel said after meeting parliamentary group leaders in Berlin. The German parliament must also give its support, she said. It was vital that there were clear rules for any peacekeeping force and that it had the backing of the Lebanese government, she added.
