UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY-GENERAL KOFI ANNAN CRITICIZED ISRAELI ACTIONS IN LEBANON, IN AN EMERGENCY SESSION OF THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL IN NEW YORK ON SUNDAY FOLLOWING AN AIRSTRIKE THAT KILLED AT LEAST 56 CIVILIANS IN THE TOWN OF QANA, ACCORDING TO DPA. "WE MUST CONDEMN THIS ACTION IN THE STRONGEST POSSIBLE TERMS," ANNAN SAID. "I AM DEEPLY DISMAYED THAT MY EARLIER CALLS FOR AN IMMEDIATE CESSATION OF HOSTILITIES WERE NOT HEEDED." THE EMERGENCY SESSION WAS HELD SUNDAY AFTERNOON TO DISCUSS THE LEBANESE CRISIS IN ADVANCE OF MONDAY'S SCHEDULED MEETING ABOUT AN INTERNATIONAL PEACEKEEPING FORCE FOR THE REGION THE MEETING WAS CALLED AT THE URGING OF LEBANESE PRIME MINISTER FOUAD SENIORA, WHO APPEALED TO THE UN TO "PUT AN END TO THE VIOLENCE IN LEBANON."
