THE AIRCRAFT SLAMMED INTO THE GROUND AFTER TAKING OFF FROM THE CHERNYAKHOVSK AIR BASE NEAR RUSSIA'S WESTERNMOST PORT CITY OF KALININGRAD, ITAR-TASS, INTERFAX AND RIA NOVOSTI NEWS AGENCIES REPORTED, QUOTING BALTIC FLEET OFFICIALS. THE PARADE MARKING THE NAVY DAY CELEBRATED ON SUNDAY WAS ATTENDED BY RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINISTER SERGEI IVANOV. THE SU-24 IS A TWIN-ENGINED BOMBER WHICH HAS BEEN A MAINSTAY WITH SOVIET AND THEN RUSSIAN AIR FORCE AND NAVAL AVIATION SINCE THE 1970S.
